The math most creators miss: GST on the fee
Razorpay's 2% isn't 2%. The 18% GST applies on the fee, so a domestic card payment really costs 2.36%:
₹100 sale → ₹2 fee + ₹0.36 GST = ₹2.36 → you keep ₹97.64
What Razorpay takes: worked examples
- ₹199 tip (domestic card) → fee ₹4.70 (2.36%) → you keep ₹194.30
- ₹999 digital product (domestic card) → fee ₹23.57 → you keep ₹975.43
- ₹4,999 course (domestic card) → fee ₹117.98 → you keep ₹4,881.02
- ₹5,000 sale (international card, 3%+GST) → fee ₹177 → you keep ₹4,823 (plus any currency conversion cost)
Notice: UPI is your best friend for domestic payments — the RBI's zero-MDR mandate means UPI collections cost you nothing on top (verify your plan's terms). If your supporters are in India, encouraging UPI over cards saves you the full 2.36% on every payment.
How to calculate Razorpay fees manually
Domestic card payment: amount × 0.0236 is your total cost (2% fee + 18% GST on it). For ₹500: 500 × 0.0236 = ₹11.80 → you keep ₹488.20. International card: amount × 0.0354.
How to keep more of every payment
- Promote UPI for Indian supporters — zero MDR beats 2.36% on every rupee.
- Price with the fee in mind — on a ₹50 sale the fee is ₹1.18; on ₹5,000 it's ₹118. Same rate, very different weight.
- Check settlement time — Razorpay's standard settlement (T+2) can be upgraded; faster settlement sometimes costs extra.
- Never pay a platform fee on top: connect Razorpay (or PayPal, Instamojo, any provider) to your free Zolt page — Zolt takes 0% platform fees forever, so the only cost is Razorpay's own fee above. See our guides on accepting international payments from India and the PayPal fee calculator.

UPI carries 0% MDR by RBI mandate. Some plans and use-cases map a platform fee onto UPI — check your specific plan's terms before assuming zero.
How much does Razorpay charge for international payments?

What is Razorpay's fee on ₹1 lakh?
Domestic card: ₹2,360 total (2% + GST). UPI: potentially ₹0. That difference is why payment-method mix matters more than volume.
Can I avoid platform fees entirely as an Indian creator?
Your provider's fee (Razorpay, PayPal, Instamojo) always applies — but the platform fee doesn't have to. Zolt charges Indian creators 0% to host tips, digital products and your page, connecting straight to your own payment account.
